Thompson CT Town Resources

Thompson, located in Windham County, Connecticut, is part of the Northeastern Connecticut Planning Region. Named after Sir Robert Thompson, an English landowner, the town had a population of 9,189 as of the 2020 census. Situated in the northeastern corner of Connecticut, it borders Webster and Dudley, Massachusetts to the north, Douglas, Massachusetts, and Burrillville, Rhode Island to the east, Woodstock, Connecticut to the west, and Putnam, Connecticut to the south.

The town is home to Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, featuring New England’s highest-banked race track, a 5/8-mile oval, and a restored 1.7-mile road course. The speedway hosts the annual World Series of Auto Racing, attracting 16 divisions and around 400 cars each fall. Thompson is also notable for the Tri-State Marker at its border and is believed to be the origin of the term “Swamp Yankee” during the American Revolution in 1776. Historically, it was the site of an Indian village known as Maanexit.

In 1891, Thompson was the location of the Great East Thompson Train Wreck, one of the worst train accidents in U.S. history, involving four trains.
