Get Some Clarity
The first step is to have a clear plan of who you are and how you want to live. Decide what space makes you feel good and what you already have to create that space.
Access The Mess
Next, it’s time to access the mess and ditch the clutter. This is a tricky step for some people. Don’t get stuck here, just start with the easiest piles and purge the items that you are clear about not needing or wanting. Think old magazines, old clothing, worn bedding, and various tchotchkes just waiting to be tossed!
Balance the Balance
Once you’ve gone through the clutter, it’s time to decide what goes where. The idea isn’t to hide your remaining things rather to find a home for everything, striking a balance between what should be put away, and what should be showcased to create your perfect space. Whatever you leave in the space will become the story that it tells. For instance, if you collect seashells, group them together to tell a story.
A Place For Everything
When you actually need something, it’s location should be easy. I would say intuitive. The best strategy here is to store things close to where you actually need or use them.
Think pots and pans (and lids) stored right next to the stove. I’ve been known to create a hot beverage station where everything needed to make hot tea or coffee is contained in one cabinet. No need to rummage through cabinets for the coffee grinder, sugar, tea bags, and honey!
Landing Zone
Can we talk about coats, keys and mail? Yeah, I’m going there guys.
We suggest a mudroom for all houses, well, a pantry too but that’s for another day. Mudrooms are a great way to keep coats, backpacks, and shoes organized while staying on-trend with design.
On a personal note, I am always losing my keys and I’m famous for piling mail. Speaking of mail, I recommend staying on top of it. Junk mail in the trash (shred it first!), and sort the rest. Don’t let it pile up!
Keep Up
The whole idea is to be mindful of your space. Clean out, clean up, and keep it that way! I know…easier said than done but I highly recommend it!
